reprioritize self-care post holidays

The end of the year and holidays can be stressful for many people. Not to mention, the complexity of preparing to celebrate with loved ones, buying gifts, and hosting various get-togethers. People in the workforce haven’t only had all that on their plate, but also trying to finalize all work goals. Self-care typically falls by the wayside as everyone frantically spreads their energy all over the place. As we hop into the new year, now’s the time for you to regroup and reprioritize your self-care routine. Here are some ways you can easily take a step back and get yourself back on track.

Take a Breath

Now that we’re in 2023, the reset button has been pushed, and we can finally just take a moment to breathe. Taking a moment to recalibrate with our surroundings is a great first step when returning to a proper self-care routine. The act of being present in the moment and monitoring your breathing helps you to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness can help you reduce stress and bodily pain, while increasing your overall quality of life. It’s a perfect way to clear your mind and eliminate any intrusive thoughts which might be slowing you down currently. There are many ways to practice mindfulness that go beyond breathing exercises – some people may partake in mindful eating and journaling, among other approaches.

Take a Walk

By this time in the new year, we’re all returning to the daily grind of work. Coming back to your desk and adjusting post-holiday break can sometimes be difficult. By the end of the day, we can often feel run down, tired, and eventually burnt out. Getting to the point of burnout is so last year, and there are ways we can combat that from becoming reality. During your lunch break or any free time on your calendar, consider taking a walk. Going outside and taking in some fresh air will help you recharge and tackle the rest of your day, even after work. It can help you stay motivated to finish the tasks ahead while harnessing the energy you need to keep going. Just remember to pack along all the necessary essentials so that you can fully embrace the outdoors and all it has to offer. Whether that means packing along a trusted pair of sunglasses with light filtration properties, or an interchangeable 3-1 jacket, it’s important you’re prepared for all the different types of weather. This way, you’re sure to get the most out of your experience and protect your health, no matter how short or long your walk is.

Take a Break

There’s nothing wrong with advocating for yourself and including some well-deserved “me time” during your day. Think of this as your out-of-office response where you can unplug from the world and enter a place where you can just be yourself. This can include taking a bath and using bath salts to unwind and make you feel great as you let go of all of the woes of the world. Another way to focus on yourself is by crossing off those productive new year resolutions. This can include escaping to other worlds by reading more books or taking up new hobbies such as cooking and other creative avenues. Meditation can be a wonderful addition to your “me time” routine, where you can set up a cozy space in your home and just tune in to your inner self and better your overall well-being.
