From Molly With Love Guide: Vitamin C for Skin Benefits

If you’re not already using Vitamin C in your skin care routine, you should be!

Vitamin C does a number of magical things for the skin:

  • Helps treat & prevent UV photodamage
  • Evens out skin tone (great for hyperpigmentation)
  • Heals scarring
  • Shields the skin from pollution
  • Improves skin hydration
  • Helps with collagen synthesis (firms the skin)
  • Aids with skin cell turnover, making you look brighter and glowy-er!

All of these reasons and more are why we’re “vitamin C heads” here at From Molly With Love. It’s also why we created our “Glow Juice” vitamin C line for skin.

Vitamin C is safe to use both in the morning and at night. In fact, we recommend using Vitamin C in the morning as a bare minimum in your skincare routine because it enhances your sunscreen’s ability to protect the skin.

In fact, I once got a second-degree curling iron burn on my arm. It was huge and UGLY and caused a really deep, dark scar after it healed. I spent a summer slathering that scar in Vitamin C serum and by the fall, it was gone!

L-Ascorbic Acid is Bae

There are many, many different forms of Vitamin C for skin. But Ascorbic acid —AKA L-ascorbic acid—is the OG. That’s because there is much more research about this type of Vitamin C than others. The only problem with L-ascorbic acid is that it’s not quite as stable as the other forms of vitamin C and can be tricky to formulate properly. That’s why you’ll see other forms of vitamin C (like Ascorbyl Palminate) more commonly found in skincare products.

L-Ascorbic Acid is a powerhouse antioxidant that brightens the skin, evens out skin tone, makes skin look younger & firmer, and zaps dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It also helps to protect your skin from UV-photoaging. It DOES NOT replace your sunscreen, though. It just helps it work a little better.

Ascorbyl Palminate for Skin

As we’ve mentioned, Ascorbyl Palminate is another type of Vitamin C that you’ll find in skincare products.

Ascorbyl Palminate is a non-acidic molecule that is made from ascorbic acid and palmitic fatty acids. It’s like ascorbic acid + palmitic acid had a baby. It actually contains vitamins A, C and D that helps to build collagen, scavenge free radicals, and make your skin look like a glowing goddess.

Ascorbyl Palminate has good research behind it and also works wonders for skin. It’s not as strong as L-Ascorbic Acid but it’s more stable, meaning it’s easier to produce and lasts longer on the shelf.

Get More Mileage from Vitamin C

Vitamin C works even better when combined with other antioxidants, like Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Ferulic Acid, and more. My favorite combination is our Glow Juice Vitamin C Toner and Sea Kelp Bioferment Essence. The order in how to use these products is:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Toner (with Glow Juice Vitamin C Toner)
  3. Essence (Sea Kelp Bioferment Essence)
  4. Other serums
  5. Moisturizer or beauty oil

If you’re a skincare minimalist, you’d skip the serums.

Our Sea Kelp Bioferment Essence is loaded with goodies, but it contains Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which is another rockstar antioxidant. These two products combined helped me achieve my best skin ever at age 33.

love, molly
